"85" DEPOT ROAD
Basic text is from the DAR History of Hollis Homes, edited by Deborah E. Lovejoy 1953 with accompanying map (Cudworth). South of the Merrill Place two clumps of lilac bushes mark the place where Samuel Jewett lived. He and his wife Sarah had eight children, born in Hollis. Sarah, born March 7, 1749, married John Philbrick, owner of the next place. Mr. Jewett died in 1791 and is buried in the church yard. Benjamin Poole lived here two or three years before he moved to the Goodwin Place in 1794. The house was moved out later so the door hung over the wall. It was then used as a cooper shop. (D.A.R.I) Samuel Jewett developed the apple known as the Jewett Red or Jewett. It was locally known as Nod-head from the fact that Jewett nodded his head when walking or talking. (Frank Burge's Notes) Large clumps of lilac on either side of a break in the stone wall south of the intersection of Merrill Road on the west side of the road still mark the place. The land is now known as part of the "Woods Farm" and with and without its flocks of Canada geese is a motif for painters even though the dairy herd which pastured here was sold in 1999. (ese 2000) |
