Chief Richard H. Darling (Retired)

Richard Darling served as Chief of Police of the Hollis Police Department from April of 1984 until December 31, 2005. He began his police career as a patrolman in Athens, New York, when he was hired after college. He ultimately was appointed Chief of Police of that department, and served in that position for five years.

He accepted an appointment to the Consolidated Railroad (Conrail) Police Department in Selkirk, New York, in 1979. He was promoted in 1981, and transferred to Worcester, Massachusetts. In 1984, he was promoted again and transferred to the Amtrak division as a Special Investigator in Boston, Massachusetts. In early 1984, he applied for the position of Chief in Hollis, and was ultimately appointed as of April 1, 1984. Chief Darling led the Hollis Police Department through some extremely challenging years and is credited with instilling in the organization a level of professionalism and progressive thinking that continues to this day.

He is a graduate of the New York State Municipal Police Academy, and has held basic and advanced police certification in the states of New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. He remains an active member of numerous civic and fraternal organizations, including the New Hampshire Association of Chiefs of Police, the New England Association of Chiefs of Police, the National Police Chief’s Association, and the International Association of Chiefs of Police.
