Halloween Safety

Happy Halloween   Trick or Treater

Halloween may very well be the most enjoyed holiday by many children and adults for that manner. Jack-o-Lanterns, Trick or Treat and Masquerade parties make this time of year very unique. All of this fun can mask the safety concerns we must be vigilant of to protect our families. Be mindful of the following tips to make this Halloween the most spooktacular ever:

Whether you purchase a costume for your child or make your own, use fire retardant materials. Some cloths are more combustible than others. Also ensure you child has good peripheral vision through eye holes in masks. Something reflective is a must.If your child is carrying a prop such as a pitchfork, or sword, be sure it is flexible enough to bend if fallen on.

Carving Jack-o-Lanterns can be great fun. Carefully choose the carving tools for your children depending on their age or abilities. Many people use candles to light their pumpkins. If you must use candles, never leave them unattended. Be aware of alternative LED light products on the market today that will give the same glowing effect.

Just like when you were a kid, parents should inspect their children’s treats for any sign of tampering and be cautious of treats not in wrappers.

Teaching your child good pedestrian skills and stranger safety will help them to trick-or-treat in safety.

Haunted Houses can be a lot of fun to create, but as a fire department we must caution you of the list of requirements necessary to implement a haunted house. These codes have been put in place by the National fire Protection Association to protect the public. Unfortunately, most were adopted as a result of a tragedy. Here is just a sample of what is required:

Portable fire extinguishers no more than 75 feet of travel distance between extinguishers.

Reduced lighting areas require protection of an automatic smoke detection system in all occupied areas, common areas, and workspaces. Confliction/confusing sounds or visuals to cease/stop upon activation of the smoke alarm.

Protected throughout by an automatic sprinkler system.

Where mazes and mirrors or other designs are in place to confound the egress path, directional exit markings shall be provided.

No hay, straw or other combustible decorations are allowed within the structure.

Emergency lighting to activate during interruption of normal lighting, power failure.

A licensed electrician should perform all electrical work with a permit from the jurisdiction.

No gasoline or combustion engines may be stored or used inside the building.
