Hotel Fire Safety

The deep winter months are definitely upon us and many families have planned vacations in the weeks to come. Whether it is to the snowy peaks or a tropical beach to get away from it all, you probably plan to stay at a hotel or motel. How many of us consider fire safety into the plan to stay at a hotel or motel. How many of us consider fire safety into the planning of our vacations? Believe it or not, there are hotel establishments that truly value fire protection for their guests and others that do not. Do not assume that your family’s safety will be passively tended to by your host. Take an active role in you safety while staying in hotels by following these guidelines

  • Choose a hotel with both sprinklers and fire alarms.
  • Take time to read the escape plan, usually located on the back of your room door.
  • Count doors between your room and the two closest stairwells.
  • Open stairwell doors to make sure they are unlocked.
  • Bring a flashlight with you. You never know when it will come in handy.
  • Keep room keys next to your bed and take them with you if an alarm sounds.
  • If an alarm sounds, evacuated closing doors behind you.
  • If you are trapped, shut off AC units and open the window to signal for help.
