With the approaching July 4th holiday, we would like to take this time to talk about fireworks safety.

In the town of Hollis, fireworks are permissible.  If you are visiting our webpage in live in a town other than Hollis, you can click here.

If you are a homeowner and you want to light off some fireworks in your own yard, the only ones that you can light are on the list available here.

Now for the safety concerns, because almost 10,000 people in the U.S. are treated every year for fireworks-related injuries. Despite the dangers of fireworks, few people understand the associated risks - devastating burns, other injuries, fires, and even death.

  • Use fireworks outdoors only and only on your own property.
  • Read the warning label and follow all directions on the package.
  • Always have water handy, such as a bucket of water or a garden hose. Stray sparks can ignite dried grass and leaves quickly.
  • Only use fireworks as they were intended to be used. Do not try to alter or combine them.
  • Never re-light a "dud" firework. Wait 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water before disposal.
  • Use common sense when using fireworks. Spectators should keep a safe distance from the person igniting them and that person should wear safety glasses.
  • Light only one firework at a time.
  • Alcohol and fireworks do not mix.
  • Only someone over the age of 12 should be allowed to handle sparklers of any type. Parents should pay special attention to children using sparklers. Sparklers can reach temperatures to 1800 degrees F. Over 50% of sparkler injuries happen to children under age 14. Sparklers have become very popular in the past few years and these small fireworks may lead to a false sense of safety. Adults must be vigilant to assure safety to prevent injuries form sparklers.
  • Do not ever use homemade fireworks or illegal explosives. Report illegal explosives to the fire or police departments.

The Hollis Police Department wishes you a Happy Fourth of July. Please keep you and your family safe during the summer months.
