Press Release

The Hollis Police Department has partnered with the Injury Prevention Center at Dartmouth Hitchcock's Children's Hospital to provide a traffic safety simulator to Hollis Brookline High School students during prom week. The simulator, on loan for the week at no cost, provided students with a realistic simulation of impaired driving and distracted driving. The simulator is equipped with a steering wheel, gas and brake pedals and a large flat screen monitor. For the impaired driving simulation, the controls to the simulator become more difficult to operate and control providing the realism of impairment while the driver attempts to negotiate their way home.

The distracted driving simulation links the driver's personal cell/smart phone to the simulator or provides a phone on the screen for simulation. As the driver operates the vehicle the simulator will send text messages, to which the driver will attempt to respond. After participating in the simulations, the driver is surveyed as to their impressions of distracted or impaired driving. 120 students and faculty went through the simulator, which was located in the school library. 32.5% of drivers stated that the effects of impaired driving were either "the same as I thought", "worse than I thought" or "much worse than I thought." 76.7% of drivers stated that the effects of distracted driving were "the same as I thought", "worse than I thought" or "much worse than I thought" with 39.2% believing that distracted driving was either "worse" or "much worse" than they expected.

Hollis Police School Resource Officer Rick Bergeron spearheaded the effort and the Hollis Police Department is grateful for having this important resource made available to the students at Hollis Brookline High School. Impaired and distracted driving continues to be a significant problem on our roadways and educating our youth and the general public is an important step toward curbing this threat.

DEA Holds Its Eighth Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday April 26

APR 21 (WASHINGTON)  After collecting more than 1,700 tons of expired, unwanted prescription medications over the past three-and-a-half years, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and more than 4,200 national, tribal, and community law enforcement partners will hold another National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday, April 26th. Americans can take their pills to one of over 5,600 collection sites across the country between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. local time. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

The public has embraced the opportunity these Take-Back Day events provide to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, or unwanted prescription drugs. Last October Americans turned in 324 tons (over 647,000 pounds) of prescription drugs. Since DEA's first event in September 2010, the public has surrendered over 3.4 million pounds of pills.
Unused medications in homes create a public health and safety concern, because they are highly susceptible to accidental ingestion, theft, misuse, and abuse. Almost twice as many Americans (6.8 million) currently abuse prescription drugs than the number of those using cocaine, hallucinogens, heroin, and inhalants combined, according to the 2012 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. And more Americans died in 2010 from overdoses of prescription medications (22,134, including 16,651 from narcotic painkillers) than from motor vehicle accidents, says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Surveys of users have found that the majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.

The public can find a nearby collection site by visiting www.dea.gov, clicking on the "Got Drugs?" icon, and following the links to a database where they enter their zip code. Or they can call 800-882-9539. Only pills and other solids, like patches, can be brought to the collection sites--liquids and needles or other sharps will not be accepted.

DEA is in the process of approving new regulations that implement the Safe and Responsible Drug Disposal Act of 2010, which amends the Controlled Substances Act to allow an "ultimate user" of controlled substance medications (that is, a patient or pet owner or the patient's caregiver) to dispose of them by delivering them to entities authorized by the Attorney General to accept them. The Act also allows the Attorney General to authorize long term care facilities to dispose of their residents' controlled substances in certain instances.

NATIONAL TAKE-BACK INITIATIVE

April 26, 2014
10:00 AM - 2:00 PM

Last October, Americans turned in 324 tons (over 647,000 pounds) of prescription drugs at over 4,114 sites operated by the DEA and its thousands of state and local law enforcement partners.  When those results are combined with what was collected in its seven previous Take Back events, DEA and its partners have taken in over 3.4 million pounds more than 1,700 tons of pills.

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue.  Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs.  Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines, flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash, both pose potential safety and health hazards.

DEA is in the process of approving new regulations that implement the Safe and Responsible Drug Disposal Act of 2010, which amends the Controlled Substances Act to allow an "ultimate user" (that is, a patient or their family member or pet owner) of controlled substance medications to dispose of them by delivering them to entities authorized by the Attorney General to accept them.  The Act also allows the Attorney General to authorize long term care facilities to dispose of their residents' controlled substances in certain instances.

Hollis Police to host Coffee with a Cop on April 1st

On April 1, 2014 officers from the Hollis Police Department and community members will come together in an informal, neutral space to discuss community issues, build relationships and drink coffee. All community members are invited to attend. The event will be held from 9:00AM to 10:30AM in the Community Room at Town Hall, located at 7 Monument Square.

Coffee with a Cop provides a unique opportunity for community members to ask questions and learn more about the department's work in Hollis. The majority of contacts law enforcement has with the public happen during emergencies, or emotional situations. Those situations are not always the most effective times for relationship building with the community and some community members may feel that officers are unapproachable on the street. Coffee with a Cop breaks down barriers and allows for a relaxed, one-on-one interaction.

Coffee with a Cop is a national initiative supported by The United States Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. Similar events are being held across the county, as local police departments strive to make lasting connections with the communities they serve. The program aims to advance the practice of community policing through improving relationships between police officers and community members one cup of coffee at a time.

More information on this program can be found at http://www.coffeewithacop.com. Questions can be directed to Lt. Richard Mello at 603-465-7637 or by email.

The Hollis Police Department will be taking part in the National Drug Take Back Day on April 28th from 10AM-2PM at the Hollis Police Department. We have participated in this event twice in the past with great success. Please see the below information that is reprinted from, and can be found at, http://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/drug_disposal/takeback/

NATIONAL TAKE-BACK INITIATIVE

April 28, 2012
10:00 AM - 2:00 PM

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has scheduled another National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day which will take place on Saturday, April 28, 2012, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  This is a great opportunity for those who missed the previous events, or who have subsequently accumulated unwanted, unused prescription drugs, to safely dispose of those medications.

Americans that participated in the DEA's third National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on October 29, 2011, turned in more than 377,086 pounds (188.5 tons) of unwanted or expired medications for safe and proper disposal at the 5,327 take-back sites that were available in all 50 states and U.S. territories. When the results of the three prior Take-Back Days are combined, the DEA, and its state, local, and tribal law-enforcement and community partners have removed 995,185 pounds (498.5 tons) of medication from circulation in the past 13 months.

"The amount of prescription drugs turned in by the American public during the past three Take-Back Day events speaks volumes about the need to develop a convenient way to rid homes of unwanted or expired prescription drugs," said DEA Administrator Michele M. Leonhart. "DEA remains hard at work to establish just such a drug disposal process, and will continue to offer take-back opportunities until the proper regulations are in place."

"With the continued support and hard work of our more than 3,945 state, local, and tribal law enforcement and community partners, these three events have dramatically reduced the risk of prescription drug diversion and abuse, and increased awareness of this critical public health issue," said Leonhart.
